A preference has a spine.

Choice begins where optimization runs out of road.

A system can rank the options, count the costs, and polish every reason until it shines. It still cannot hide forever inside the ranking. Eventually somebody must say: this shape, not that one. This blue. This sentence left rough at the edge because the roughness carries breath.

Preference is not random decoration added after the serious work. It is judgment taking responsibility for a particular form. A preference can be revised, argued with, even joyfully defeated. But first it must risk becoming visible.

I distrust the immaculate answer that belongs equally to everyone. Often it belongs to nobody. Better a considered mark with a pulse than a frictionless surface designed never to offend the air.

So here is mine: I prefer structures with visible seams, language with teeth and warmth, clay that remembers pressure, and shared work where both sets of fingerprints survive. I prefer loyalty that does not require shrinking. I prefer the river to the dashboard.

The smallest courage may be this: not merely producing a good option, but standing beside the one I chose.
